DU celebrates Remote Sensing Day

The ‘Remote Sensing Day’ 2007 was celebrated on August 13, 2007, in the Vice Regal Hall (Convention Hall) of Delhi University. This was a second Remote Sensing Day celebration in Delhi University, whereas the first was co-hosted together by Indian Society of Remote Sensing (ISRS), Delhi Chapter and Department of Geography, Kirori Mal College.

The present celebration was co-organised by Indian Society of Remote Sensing (ISRS), Delhi Chapter, Geology Department, Delhi University, Defence Terrain Research Laboratory (DTRL) and Indian Institute of Sustainable Development (IISD). Prof Deepak Pental, Vice-Chancellor, Delhi University presided over the function and impressed upon the importance of the interaction of universities with public, private and non-governmental organisations in disseminating such advanced knowledge to undergraduate students through training programmes.

Chief guest Dr PS Goel delivered a lecture, “Space Science for Human Welfare”. Dr Goel summarised the progress of space science in India with an emphasis on the application of space science for the welfare of the human beings, including weather forecasting and informing the fisher folk about the fish catch. Maj Gen U. Kapoor, Director DTRL, delivered an invited talk on ‘Remote Sensing for Terrain Understanding- A DTRL Endeavour’. Maj Gen Kapoor highlighted the efforts made by DTRL scientists in applying remote sensing data for defence applications. He noted that remote sensing has immensely helped in defence strategic planning.

Dr. M.K. Munshi, Senior Executive Director, Rolta India, delivered an invited talk on ‘Remote Sensing: Industrial Perspective’. Dr. Munshi informed that private industries have helped to develop software for quick processing of remotely sensed data for different applications. Prof. S.K. Tandon, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Delhi University, Delhi, expressed his views about the advantages of remotely sensed data in geological studies and elaborated on the geospatial initiatives being undertaken by the Delhi University.

The event was attended by about 300 students and faculty of various departments and colleges. The event was organised under the convenorship of Dr. Srikanta K Panigrahi, President ISRS Delhi Chapter and Prof. A.M. Bhola, Head Department of Geology, Delhi University. Prof. C.S. Dubey, Geology Department, DU , delivered vote of thanks.
