‘ProjectWise is incomparable’
Jackie Cissell
Director, Bentley Civil Marketing
Bentely’s suite of products integrate well and bring together varied data from different sources with consummate ease, says the company’s Director, Civil Marketing, Jackie Cissell. She believes Bentley has a lot to offer India in its ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure |

Bentley has bought some product lines and operates in the civil design market. How do the products integrate with one another? |
They all probably integrate well through XML. Some of them are, of course, based on MicroStation. But anything that is based on MicroStation also reads and writes DWJ. That’s true for each of our product lines, I would say, whether they are implemented and used or not. Sometimes, the data is integrated because they come from different companies. But in general, if you take a specific user using MX, they typically stick to that particular product line. As you know, the three product lines were each individually acquired by Bentley. Each of them brings with it, a large contingent of users. It is counter productive to persuade them to switch over from what they are using to one of the three products. So we maintain different product lines for all those users. I don’t think this is a major issue. In all the major projects, where we were bringing data together from three different sources, the issues are minor.

Pressure on the infrastructure segment comes from having to do more with less. So how does Bentley meet this challenge? |
I think on the design side, development of component technology is probably a little bit more advanced in roads. MX uses mind stream technology which is nice. So, advances are continuing on that front. But I think in design itself, probably, country by country localisation is on the upward curve. As you know, it is not just a translation into another language. It’s about complying with your standards and your type of reporting. The design products themselves decide the component technology. People really push the limit everyday. In terms of collaboration, through Project Wise, we are able to provide an enterprise solution that’s incomparable. Competitors cannot possibly match what we do. Today if you are using an AutoCAD based system, it’s just not there. I think what we’ve done in terms of collaboration and enterprise wide distributed computing in civil industry has just been monumental. In civil, there are extremely large projects which involve many partners. This is one key area where I think they are able to save quite a bit and increase their Return on Investment. I think I have explained some of the shortcomings of improving productivity. We do deal with situations like damage to a bridge. Using laser scanning coupled with our technology we can figure out what needs to be designed to repair the damage. There are actually areas where new technology in terms of data collection and design really do bring incredible benefits in terms of time savings and probably cost savings. |
