It has been 25 years since the inception of NRDMS. How successful has it been in achieving its objectives? |
NRDMS has been very successful in achieving its main objective of promoting geographic information systems, global positioning systems and remote sensing in our country and providing research inputs for the last mile research to reach the grass root levels of planning and development. One of its thrust areas has been utilisation of geospatial data as a decision support for the government at the district level. In addition to the promotion of geospatial data base creation, maintenance and utilisation, NRDMS was actively involved in organising training programmes at various levels and carried out a number of projects for dissemination of the technology at various levels right from the school. The programme, mapping neighbourhood, for schoolchildren was an astounding success and the idea was presented in the form of a paper at the Cambridge Conference in 2003 and it was adjudged as the best idea and the best paper for adoption by other developing and developed nations. The landslide programme is unique as well and added substantial content to the knowledge base.

One of the main functions of NRDMS is developing an integrated database. How `do you go about collecting the varied data and formatting it in such a way as to help micro-level planning? |
Initially, we had been working on developing geospatial data at the district level for decision support for district administration and line departments. Specialised themes were generated utilising topographic data, satellite data and other data. However, due to advancement in technology, the methodology is undergoing a change. We are now in the process of updating the old data and creating a new data with geo-referencing all entities to provide seamless data base which is capable of answering any kind of query. It is used for various applications in micro-level planning such as selection of an ideal place for election booths, identifying areas which need connectivity by road under the Prime Minister Gram Sadak Yojana etc.,
